Simulator Car Racing Game Setup at Home

Its everyone's childhood dream to be able play car racing games like driving the real thing. Having a real steering wheel with an accelerator, a clutch, a gear shifter and brakes is as real as it gets.

For those who never outgrow their childhood.....

Requirements:

  • Should be as real as it gets, no compromises
  • No dangling wires, no tripping hazards
  • Stable setup (no shaking table leading to backaches)
  • Optimal distance between the display at the steering wheel
  • Kid abuse friendly
  • Should work with PS5 or XBOX (making it work with both is not easily possible)
  • Should work out of the box with popular racing games like Dirt5, Dirt Rally, F1, Dakar, GTR2, Nascar, NFS, WRC etc

Which steering wheel to purchase?

This is a no brainer as Logitech makes some of the best steering wheels. They work out of the box with PS5 or XBOX depending on the version purchased. There are many games which are compatible with the steering wheels that are manufactured by Logitech. I went with the Logitech G293 as it comes with its latest TRUEFORCE technology and has proper support in India. Logitech website lists the games that are compatible with its steering wheels like mentioned here

Sheenu Games from Ludhiana did a fab job sending a brand new piece properly packed with original invoice. This was the first best decision.

Which stand to purchase?

Choosing the right stand is the hardest part of this kind of a setup. There are many options available on Amazon with differing price ranges. There are some really expensive rigs like the Logitech Throphy which costs upwards of a lakh rupees! There are more affordable options available on amazon starting from around 8K.

It is super important that the stand is heavy and does not shake as you are bound to rattle the steering and floor the pedals when racing. If you buy a cheap/lightweight stand, it may feel easier to assemble and friendly on the pocket initially. But it will not give you the confidence when playing as the whole setup will shake during gameplay spoiling the experience. The other problem with lighter stands is that they will constantly move forward as you press the pedals. You need something heavy that stays in place and takes the brunt of your enthusiastic moves when racing.

I co-incidentally stumbled upon this Indian manufacturer InRacing which is from Bangalore through a reference. They have some really good racing setups/stands which stood out for their quality and strength from the time I saw the pics. I immediately ordered their entry level Racing Stand. It came in a big box via Gati courier (it was heavy) and the assembly was moderately challenging but not impossible. It comes folded, so you need at least one more person to lift it into position and put the screws. Expect the assembly to be a 2 hour process. It comes with the bolts needed, but I had also ordered a few more M6 nuts from Amazon (link). I also added an existing Yoga mat below the stand to prevent it from slipping. The stand does come with extra corner legs with rubber bidding to hold it in place, I have not used them as they increase the height.

This was the second best decision.

Setup:

This part is best explained in pictures. I have the stand setup on one side and the TV on the opposite wall. This required me to draw 2 wires around the walls to avoid tripping on them.

  • The first wire is the USB cable that connects the Logitech G293 unit to the PS5 console. The USB wire that comes with Logitech G293 is long but not long enough to go around the room. This is where the Storite 10 meter USB 3.0 extension cable from Amazon came in very handy. I was skeptical if it would work or not, but it has not disappointed so far.
  • The second wire is the power cable itself which I wanted to connect to my APC UPS which sites beside the PS5 unit under the TV. This was a gamble as having lengthy power cables can cause a drop in voltage. Also, amazon does not have a lot of good quality long power cables on sale. I purchased 10 meter cables from a couple of sellers and used the one which had the best quality.
    • Note: You can skip this step if you are able to power the Logitech G293 steering wheel from a point near to its location. I highly recommend connecting it to an UPS to avoid damage due to voltage fluctuations.

The blue arrows in the first image depict the path of the two cables around the room. The PS5 unit is right below the TV and the wires are neatly routed around the room and don't come in the way when walking and cleaning the floors.

That's all for now folks! Hope you get your own Vroom Vroom setup soon!
